Hey guys! You may have seen some negative feedback/comments about my tattoo, so I’d like to clear the air a bit here.
Suum cuique (yes, with the u) is the motto of Prussia and holds the meaning of “to each his own”. The words themselves don’t exactly reflect this sentiment, so I made the artistic decision to change it slightly.
I took some artistic liberty with the spelling- I’m not going to just copy some phrase exactly on my body. This isn’t for Latin or even for Prussia- it’s for me and that’s it, like anyone’s tattoo. And, since I greatly disliked how it looked with the extra “u”, I removed it and made it my own. To each his own, and it’s (thus) spelled unusually. Not due to a mistake, not due to me being careless. It was a long pondered decision and means an immeasurable amount to me. No one else will have a tattoo like this, and THAT’S what suum cuique means. The beauty is in the aesthetic appeal and significance, not a shallow interpretation like the spelling.
Further (for any history buffs), Prussia spoke German in 1901 when the Second Orthographic Standardization was implemented. This literally changed the German language and all its rules- for aesthetic reasons. Oh, and the concept of orthographic reform? It was proposed by Prussia in 1876. What more PERFECT way could there be to represent my heritage of Prussia than to embody their motto in a way that’s so much more than face-value?
Please keep this in mind when regarding my (and anyone’s!) tattoo: To each his own. If it makes the person happy and means a lot to him or her, please respect that and be supportive or silent.
As my father put it, “It is a saying so simple it means what you want it to mean, and yet it is so complex that it defies anyone to fully comprehend its depth nor fully understand what it means to someone else. It not only means what the individual wants it to mean, it means what the individual needs it to mean.”
